Google Ranking

The creators of Google send out bots to millions of websites, collecting information for their search engine. These bots are special programs that use a list of instructions, called an algorithm, for what to collect.

An index is created, like the list found in the back of a book, for quick reference in aiding a persons search. Status is based on 200 signals or points of interest.

One of these signals is the Google ranking of the sites inbound links. The Google ranking of the inbound links is based on how many other websites are linked to a certain website.

If there is an outside link that returns to the same site a certain number of times then the bot scores it higher than one that has fewer people referencing it. The bot is able to check if the links are true, for instance if the website is one that does spam or not, and can make a difference when considered in the ranking.

One tool in seeing how a website is regarded is the PageRank tool. It is a free application and can help the webmaster determine if he or she has any problems.

Google is one of the main search engines that people use, so being able to rate high means more people will see the site. PageRank does not tell a complete picture but it is worth checking out.

Building a website is a lot of work, especially for a beginner. For most of us it is important to direct traffic to the site and getting a high Google ranking can make a difference.

Interesting and timely content are extremely important but also the links can make or break a site. They are not the only search engine out there but it is the one of the best known.
